How to Plant Soil-Grown Seedlings in the Tower Garden

Did you find a tomato plant you just have to have at your local garden center? Or did you find some watermelons magically sprouting in your compost pile? If you'd like, you can transfer them from the soil to the outdoor FLEX Tower Garden!

HOW TO

Choose young seedlings and remove all fruits and flowers (you want the plant to put energy into the roots!). This works well with tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants and can be a great technique to use if you are late in planting your seedlings and need a jump start!

NOTE: Cucumbers and lettuce are not fond of being transplanted like this, but they do very well when directly seeded into rockwool cubes and popped straight into the Tower Garden to germinate there.

Rinse the roots well to remove ALL soil.

Rip a rockwool cube in half and make a 'rockwool sandwich' with the plant at the same level as it was in the soil. Secure with a rubber band. It's OK if the rockwool smooshes. At this point, you just need it for stability, not root growth.

Transfer into the Tower Garden. I like to do this in the cool of the evening so that the plant has a chance to acclimate overnight. If you see wilting during the day, remove the timer from the system to allow the pump to run continuously for a day or two. It should perk up and be happy soon!
