Do your tomato leaves look like Swiss cheese? If so, they have probably been invaded by army worms! Southern armyworm Spodoptera eridania feeds on foliage and can take down a tomato or corn plant in just a few hours.
What Can I Do About Army Worms?
Army worms hatch from eggs laid by moths. Unless you’re diligent in watching for signs of them on your tomato leaves, you could find yourself in a battle of epic proportions. When you see the damage, snap off the affected branch and toss it in the garbage.
If you miss the initial worm attack, you can fight back with insecticide! Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew works excellently and is OMRI-approved. Get it at Home Depot or Lowes.
The University of Florida wants me to remind you to always read the label before applying any pesticide. Studies have shown that gardeners have better results when they take a moment to check the label before spraying.
Best luck in your bug fighting!
